Back in February, I met three young women who risked their lives journeying to the UK in search of safety.
Khadeja from Syria, Marwa from Afghanistan and G whose identity is protected were photographed for Refugee Action x Cosmopolitan UK.
I was touched to the core by their spirit and clear intention to make life work despite unspeakable trauma. I thought of them when Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe described the ‘black hole’ in her heart which she had to leave behind in Iran (in order to move forward).
I’m hopeful that these women’s dreams and ambitions are fulfilled and that the recognition that some refugees are ‘just like us’ extends to these women who in their 20s and 30s, with university plans, new jobs, family pets and quiet perseverance are exactly that.
Big thanks to Rachael for the commission and to Lou for assisting and retouch.
